About The Chamber
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce was chartered in July of 1964 with only 18 members based upon a recommendation by the Board of City Development in May of 1964.
In 1989 the Chamber of Commerce was moved to its current location at 810 E Broadway Street. This move was made possible due to the generous contribution of the Robert Simmons Home to the Chamber of Commerce. The Robert Simmons Home is a Texas Historical Landmark and is a beautiful property and asset to the Chamber of Commerce and to Sweetwater.
The Chamber is involved in many projects in conjunction with its mission to promote, develop & improve the economy and life in Sweetwater.
The Chamber of Commerce was recently instrumental in developing and erecting the wind blade gateway signs seen in the above picture. These massive gateway signs sit on Interstate 20 on both the east and west entryways into Sweetwater and make quite an impression to visitors and residents alike. The Chamber is currently hoping to work closely with City and County leadership for improvements in our visible gateways and highly traveled streets.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce is also quite involved with recruiting and promoting new and existing businesses in Sweetwater. We are a great resource for demographic information, for relocation information, for identification of needs for additional growth and and we provide excellent advisory resources for businesses and other organizations.
The Chamber also gets involved with some fun and exciting projects in the town and area. We host the Christmas parade each year – a community wide event honoring our Outstanding Citizens and local favorites. We host the Sammy Baugh Classic, a high school football classic played in the historic and area known Mustang Bowl. We host multiple football playoff games in the bowl each year as well as music and other events.
The Chamber coordinates some of the premier leadership programs in the area. Leadership Sweetwater (for adults) and Future Sweetwater (for Sweetwater High School sophomores) are 9 month leadership programs that involve learning much about our city, county and area.
The Chamber is governed by a volunteer board of directors which serve three year terms. There are twelve members total. Election is made by the membership of the Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber services include: Ribbon cutting for new members, and promotion of business. Newletters, Networking and “Coffee” events, Membership Appreciation Luncheon, Help and assistance to Non Profit Organizations, Event promotion in radio, website, facebook, email, mail and television opportunities. We work closely with the area media to make sure that events and happenings receive the best notice we can give.
The Chamber sponsors several events through its Convention and Visitors Bureau. Some of these are the Big Country Cutting Horse Association Show, West Texas Rodeo Association events, the WASP Homecoming Reunion, The Wood Bat Classic, The Area II FFA Convention and various other events. Many of these events bring 400+ visitors to Sweetwater and those visitors help improve our local economy by staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping in our retail establishments as well as providing some really great entertainment for residents!
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce is a great organization that is always looking for new and inventive ways to improve our businesses, our community and our quality of life.
